Last weekend, during the Hurley US Open of Surfing and before the swell season, California had a great south swell, which made the US Open at Huntington an amazing competition, where a young local, Brett Simpson, who lives a couple streets away from the competition area, won the 100.000$ prize (the biggest at the moment in ASP history) over such amazing contenders as Mick Fanning, Kelly Slater, CJ Hobgood, Rob Machado, Adriano de Souza... so at the end local knowledge won over surfing's elite.
Of course Huntington Beach wasn't the only place with great waves in California during last weekend, as we can see in the video above, The Wedge was spectacular, and for the first time in that wave, as you can see at the end of the video, an amazing ride with a Stand Up Paddle, I never thought that was possible in such a wave. The guys from Sufrline.com have done a great job following this swell out of season in his own shoreline, so I absolutely recommend clicking HERE to watch the amazing photos from the air by Tom Cozard with Howard Hamlin flying the helicopter.Of course we can't talk about California without mentioning Malibu, where also on Surfline published a few months ago one of the best reports I have seen about this spot, with classic photos from Bill Parr and a passionate narration by Allen Sarlo, so if you want to watch (and listen) such report, which I absolutely recommend, click HERE, and then you'll want to buy a longboard and a ticket to L.A.
