Good waves and happy new year!

The end of the year hasn't been great for windsurfing, but on the other hand, the surf has been amazing, and looks like we are starting the new year the same way.

Arguineguin this morning

I'm having some problems with the calibration of my screen, so I can't edit pictures propperly at the moment, but I had to share at least one picture from the surf session at Arguineguin this morning.

We just had a few days of good waves at the South of Gran Canaria, for once I surfed all I could instead of taking picutres, so here you have some shots from previous seasons.

Christmas Day

Perfect Christmas Day in Gran Canaria, with a great morning surf session in Arguineguin, with small waves but getting bigger with the rising tide and nearly glassy until early afternoon, when it started a light onshore breeze, then I took a few pictures and headed to El Faro, for a second session, at the beginning the tide was too high, but as it was going down, conditions were getting better and better.

December 24th

Looks like Christmas is starting to deliver, for the ones who woke up early today in Pozo Izquierdo, there were some nice presents to ride.

El Fronton invitational

One day the world will discover how amazing this wave is, but not this time. The competition was spectacular, the riders did an awesome job, and for sure the conditions were wild, really wild, but more for the wind than for the size of the wave, not small by any means, that for sure, but not the huge perfection most of us were expecting for this location, maybe next year.

Looks like the day has arrived, and the competition at El Frontón, is expected to start tomorrow Monday around 10 am, for the ones who can't go to there, it will be broadcasted live at Red Bull TV.

Solo Atlantic cossing

Adolfo, is one of the usual windsurfers at Pozo Izquierdo, is preparing for the Mini Transat 2013, from France to the Caribean, alone in a tiny 6,5 meter boat.

El Faro

We still have wind from the South-West, but today with some swell, so we had fun conditions in all the spots between Juan Grande and El Faro de Maspalomas.

One of the good things of living in a round shaped island is that no matter what direction the wind is blowing, it's always a spot with the right orientation for windsurfing; Juan Grande was the spot today.

A champion to be crowned today at Pipeline

Despite not having a good forecast, yesterday Pipeline/Backdoor delivered plenty of good barrels as you can see at the video.
The Billabong Pipe Masters in memory of Andy Irons was left in the quarter finals and is finishing today, the live webcast is starting a 7:45 local time (17:45 GMT).

We haven't had propper wind for a while, but the weather is soo good that feels like going in the water no matter what.

We had an amazing sunset yesterday at Pozo Izquierdo, but I dont event get to imagine the view from the airplane in the first picture, for sure they arrived at Gran Canaria in style.

El Fronton Invitational

Today started the waiting period for what will be the gratest event in bodyboarding history, in words of Ben Player "Egos will be broken and injuries likely in the most highly anticipated event in bodyboarding's history".
16 riders invited, 12 internatioal (8 world champions) and 4 local guys will be at El Fronton from today till December 21 waiting for the biggest day for a one day event which will be broadcasted live at Red Bull TV

With wind from the South-East, Galdar looked like a good option for a windsurfing session, the wind never came in, but the surf session wasn't bad at all.

Today starts the Billabong Pipe Masters and looks like they have good waves in Hawaii, so they're wasting no time and the competition is starting at 7:45 local time (17:45 GMT)

Here you have some of the pictures I've been taking this year in Pozo Izquierdo, and a couple at other windsurfing locations in Gran Canaria.
Except for the cover, all the pictures are in chronological order, I wish you enjoy them.

Strange days

South-West wind and West swell, not the average conditions in Gran Canaria, so the regular spots are not working but you can find some nice conditions at other spots in the island.

Yesterday, after the heavy rains the previous night, the sea was looking like chocolate, but conditions were good for windsurfing, so we went in the water anyway, of course.
Today the water is blue again, and windsurfing conditions are still good for sails in the 5 - 5,3 range.

XCEL 2011

Already in Pozo Izquierdo the new XCEL wetsuits 2011.

South-West wind

Right now, we have moderate wind from the South-West, usually this direction is too gusty in Pozo Izquierdo, but perfect at Juan Grande, where I've been told they're windsurfing now.

Is coming

Big swell and West wind for the next few days, looks like the biggest will be on Monday, but Sunday and Tuesday are looking good too.

Sunset

The sunset this evening was absolutely amazing, I have no picutures because I was in the water, surfing at Los Muellitos, it was small but nice, with a light offshore breeze and one of the most spectacular skys I've ever seen, and from the water I think is the most amazing place to watch a sunset.

Victor Fernandez world champion

Last day at Cabo Verde and no wind, so it´s official, Victor Fernandez is the 2010 windsurfing wave world champion, here you have the announcement from PWA's website:

09:00 Welcome to the final day of the 2010 Cabo Verde World Cup, and the last day of the 2010 PWA World Tour. Unfortunately there's no wind, and no waves once again. Head judge, Duncan Coombs has decided to call the competition off, leaving the world rankings unchanged after Klitmoller.

Rider of the week

We are starting a new section today at Pozo News, and our first "rider of the week" is Raquel, not only she upgraded from Salinas to Pozo at the end of the Summer, but she suprised me again today, windsurfing on freeride-slalom equipment and going really fast.

I guess this is one of those situations where go to the beach for a surf, there are good waves, but don´t get in the water.
